Do you believe in angels? Have you ever seen an angel? Here are two of my favourite angel stories as told by our minister in his sermons:
A minister and his wife were out for a drive in the country somewhere near Loch Lomond when he spotted an abandoned and neglected church. He said to his wife that he wanted to go and take a closer look around the church. He met an old woman there who told him that this church had been a very active church in its day but that the congregation had drifted away and now there was no one left to look after the building. The minister decided to apply for the post and, being the only applicant, was accepted. He went into the local community and asked the various tradesmen to help him rebuild the church. He negotiated to buy the materials at cost and when the tradesmen had a slack day, they would send their men round to work on the church. Soon the church was finished and the men who had helped build the church began to attend the services. Soon the congregation grew. The minister wanted to thank the old woman, but no matter who he spoke to in the community, no one had ever seen this woman. She had vanished. Was she an angel sent by God to help rebuild this church?
There was a small team of Christians tending to a village somewhere in Africa during a bloody civil war. Every day, they tried to help the wounded regardless of which side they had for. One day, a tribal warlord advanced his army to attack the camp. One of the people who the Christians had helped ran back to the camp to warn them. Having no weapons or training to mount any kind of defence, the team sat in a huddle inside the largest hut. The sat down in the dirt and closed their eyes and prayed over and over for help. From their hut, they could hear the sound of the advancing soldiers. And then there was silence. Expecting the terrible sounds of gunfire and artillery at any moment, they continued to pray. After a while, the silence had not been broken and one of the team peered out of the door. There was no one in sight. The team went back about their business and the next day they met the tribal warlord.
"Thank you for not attacking our camp. We are peaceful Christians here on a humanitarian mission of mercy. We have no weapons here so what stayed your hand?" asked one of the Christian team
"I advanced my soldiers as far as the treeline. When we looked out at your camp, we were astonished to see the largest hut surrounded by an army of soldiers standing 12 feet tall with huge shining shields and massive swords. My men were filled with fear at the sight of such soldiers and they fled."
