Kilbirnie Auld Kirk

WelcomeA view of the Kirk from the South

Minister -  Rev Ian W Benzie BD

Welcome to the Website of Kilbirnie Auld Kirk. We are a congregation worshipping in one of the oldest sanctuaries in continuous use in Scotland. There is a wealth of history to be discovered here, from building styles to the abilities of true craftsmen over the ages.  We welcome visitors to the Kirk, on Sundays (obviously!) and at other times by arrangement through myself.  A team of Guides is available to assist interest groups, perhaps as part of a larger itinerary through saeveral historic buildings and sites in Ayrshire.

As a worshipping community, we enjoy different forms of music from the Modern to the Redemption Hymnary, all chosen to reflect the themes of our services.  We have a good number of active organisations from Rainbows, to the Guild and Choir.  All will readily welcome additional members!

Our site has been fairly inactive in certain aspects but, over the next few weeks and months, we shall be working to adjust our presentation.  If you have any thoughts on what you might like to see on the site, please e-mail the Minister through our Contact Page.

I have been made aware of an article in Wikipedia about Kilbirnie Auld Kirk.  It has been created without the knowledge of the Kirk and as such we cannot recommend it as a valid research tool.  It may contain inaccuracies of fact or be incomplete in its range of information.  Additionally it is, we understand, open to editing by anybody.  For truly accurate information, please make use of our contact page.  We shall make every endeavour to assist all who contact us.

Recently I have become aware of an upsurge in interest in the War memorials of Kilbirnie, and in particular in the Book of Remembrance kept in the Auld Kirk.  I have undertaken a project to photograph the pages of the Book and our own Memorial.  These will gradually be published on this site.  In time, I hope to add photographs of as many Memorials in the town to the records.  I hope you will find something of interest in keeping alive the memories of the many men, and the one lady who laid down their lives that ours might flourish.  If you have any stories about any of the people, I should be most grateful if you would let me know.

As an example, you will soon find on the Memorial Page, the records of four men all with the surname 'Mochrie.' They served in the Great War. I believe they were all brothers and that THREE of them were lost on the same day.

There are a number of sites dedicated to War records and, as time permits, I shall include them on our "Useful Links" page.
